Interesting findings from a study conducted by UK Online Measurement Company have found that the 50 and over age demographic make up the largest group of new internet users in the UK.
The study which looked at data between May 2009 and May 2010 found that internet usage in the UK increased from 36.9 million to 38.8 million which is a roughly an increase of 5%. Of this 1.9million increase in users, a massive 1 million of this figure is result of the 50 and over age bracket.
The study also found that new users were mainly male accounting to 38% of new users in comparison to a 15% growth in female users.
Interestingly the sites that were said to be accessed by 50 and overs were health, video, community, travel, fashion, genealogy, cooking, and greeting cards.
Stats like this are always intriguing as many still overlook older age brackets when considering an online strategy.
As UKOM/Nielsen representative Alex Burmaster said on speaking about these “The fact that one in four Britons who use the Internet today are 50 to 64 years old proves it is no longer the sole preserve of the young and technical literati.”
