UK Online Advertising Still Strong Despite Possible Drop

An annual report from the Internet Advertising Bureau has shown that online display advertising in the UK has risen by 11% year on year to £709m in 2009.

However IAB state that this is not truly reflective as “There were sites that were not included in the 2008 study that have been in 2009.” This has meant that it is likely advertising expenditure has dropped by 4.4% in 2009 when looking at annual like for like figures.

In 2008 IAB valued online display ad market at £637m and a 4.4% drop would indicate a value of around £609m in 2009. According to The Guardian the difference in figures is largely down to the omission of Facebook’s ad revenue for last year as it was not part of the 2008 figures. This could mean that Facebook has generated quite a large chunk of the overall online ad spend revenue in the UK.

The report has also shown that online ad spend on the whole rose from £3.35bn in 2008 to 3.5bn in 2009 which is makes for impressive reading considering the recession which had an effect on all other marketing mediums.

Other findings from the report have also shown that paid search increased by 9.5% to £2.15bn equating to 60.7% and affiliate marketing increased by 38.2% to 72.6m which is another year on year rise further demonstrating the strength of digital marketing.
