Twitter To Introduce Search Ads

Twitter is working on a plan that will allow advertisers to display text ads in search results.

According to reports the ads will appear in 140 character tweets and will be found via Twitter search and third party sites that use Twitter’s API. A post from Peter Kafka on AllThingsD states that “ads will be tied to Twitter in Twitter searches in the same way that Google’s (GOOG) original ads were. So a search for, say, “laptop,” may generate an ad for Dell (DELL)”.

Twitter’s usability will not be jeopardised by this as ads will only show when a search is performed which means that users who have not searched for anything will not see these ads in their streams.

Ads will seen via Twitter search and third party sites

Twitter releasing an advertising platform on its micro blogging system has been on the cards for some time and appeared to be the only logical step Twitter could take into making money from its service.

No official release has been made in when this is likely to be rolled out, however AllThingsD blog has hinted at a lunch date of later this year.
