Microsoft has pulled off a major coup by striking a deal with Hewlett Packard (HP) that will see Bing continue as the default search engine on their machines worldwide.
The deal - which is an extension to a previous partnership that existed in only the US and Canada - is a great move from Microsoft as it still ploughs its efforts into challenging Google for search engine dominance.
HP, which is the world largest technology company, has a presence in almost every market throughout the world when it comes to personal computers and so this will be a major benefit to Microsoft’s strategy in turning more people over the Bing.
The deal, which has been penned for 3 years, will see Bing bundled in with all HP PCs and see MSN become the default homepage for all new users to the system. Of course users can change this to meet their own preferences however this will work in Microsoft’s favour in terms of building brand awareness and also getting people using it who are not web savvy, i.e. silver surfers. However I do personally feel that at the moment it is this ‘older’ market that are likely to take up using Bing, you almost get the feeling that younger people growing up with Google will be hard pressed to change.
This partnership with HP is another move from Microsoft that once again tells us that Microsoft is deadly serious in their pursuit of search engine dominance. Again only time will tell how it all pans out but I still feel that Google’s brand alone will be hard to beat and this before evening mentioning Google’s superior algorithm… but we shall see.

It will be very interesting to see how this new partnership plays off and how that could affect seo companies who predominately optimise for the google search engine.I think that HP and there prominence could hold some weight in the market.
