An interesting study in the US has found that more young people are turning to Twitter as Facebook users are getting older. The research conducted by the Paw Internet & American Life Project found that the average age of Facebook users has jumped seven years from 26 to 33 compared with the average age of Twitter users which was 31.
According to an article on Brand Republic in December 2008 the age bracket of 18-24 made up 19% of Twitter users and has risen to 37% in September this year. 25-24 year-olds have also risen from 20% to 31%.
Interestingly a conclusion to come out of the study was that the more devices that people have the more likely they are to use Twitter with roughly 40% of internet users with four or more internet-enabled devices Tweeting compared with only 10% for people with only one device.
Research like this is very useful to pay attention to especially when using social media marketing as part of your businesses marketing strategy. Understanding the demographics of the various social networking sites can allow for much better targeting.
The research was conducted through telephone interviews with 2,253 adults who were 18 and older and so naturally your own conclusions on how accurate this information is can be drawn especially given that Facebook has a lot more users than Twitter. However gaining this slight insight always is always useful nonetheless and also highlights that there is perhaps more longevity to Twitter than people were originally predicting…
