18 hours ago Robin Sloan, an ex Current Media executive posted the 5 billionth tweet on the micro blogging giant Twitter.
The tweet was nothing remarkable or ground breaking as you might expect the fates to provide for the 5 billionth tweet, it was merely a reply to another user with the words ‘Oh lord’, not world changing but still rather fitting. Although there is no prize for having the 5 billionth tweet, Sloan gets the accolade of having a tweet containing 5000000000 within the URL, as the number at the end of a tweet URL is the running total of tweets up to that specific point of posting.
GigaTweet, a third party twitter application has been monitoring and measuring the number of tweets for quiet some time now. In the time that I have been writing this blog 65,000 tweets have been posted, and there have been over 20million tweets since the landmark 5 billion mark was reached just 18 hours ago!
This might squash stats released last week claiming that growth within the Twitter platform is slowing; it will be interesting to see how long it will take for Twitter to reach the next big milestone of 10 billion tweets.
