Facebook Becomes the Fourth Most Visited Site in the World

Facebook has now shot past Wikipedia to become the fourth most visited website in the world, succeeded only by Google, Microsoft and Yahoo.

Facebook managed to reach this position after growing 150% in the past year, and by adding 24m new unique users in June. Facebook has surpassed the likes of Myspace, Amazon, eBay and AOL in order to land itself within the top 5 – however they are still a long way from catching Google, Yahoo and Microsoft who are generating between 200m – 500m more unique visitors then the social networking giant. This should take nothing away from Facebook as the amount of growth that they have achieved in such a short period of time is enviable. It is also worth noting that Facebook consists of only one site, something that is quiet unique amongst the top 10, as Google not only encompasses all of its Google branded sites, but also such web properties as YouTube and Gmail.

The full breakdown and user figures are as follows:

Google Sites: 844 Million
Microsoft Sites: 691 Million
Yahoo! Sites: 581 Million
Facebook: 340 Million
Wikimedia Foundation Sites: 303 Million
AOL: 280 Million
eBay: 233 Million
CBS Interactive: 186 Million
Amazon: 183 Million
Ask Network: 174 Million

Facebook reaching the fourth spot adds further emphasis on how important it is for businesses to be utlilising social platforms like Facebook. With 340m unique users each month and 250m active users; never has it been more important to have a business presence on Facebook.
