Online sales in the UK are set to reach £31.2 billion by 2013, according to a forecast from Verdict Research. This figure will account for 10% of all retail spend in the UK.
The immediate future also looks very promising for online sales, with 13.3% growth expected throughout 2009, with a forecast of £20.9billion set to be spent via internet purchases.
With a constant talk of recession and struggling retailers, this forecast is particularly promising and sets out ecommerce transactional websites as an absolute necessity as firms look to survive the economic downturn.
The key to these increased sales is the ability of internet retailers to offer lower prices compared with the high street, as well as the convenience offered through online channels.
At present, it is the affluent AB group of consumers that dominate online shopping, but this is predicted to flatten out between all user groups as broadband continues to become more widespread. This will give more of the population access to online deals.
