Google Dominates Online Video in the UK

Data released from comScore, a US based web analytics company, shows that Google owned websites are dominating the online video arena.

Figures show that 27.4 million UK users viewed 3.2 billion videos in the month of June 2008 alone, a share of 49.3%. BBC owned websites had the second most views, highlighting Google’s dominance with just 1.4% share. Microsoft sites were third with 0.8%, Fox Interactive Media fourth with 0.7% and ITV fifth with 0.6%.

Google’s video properties, which include the massively popular YouTube as well as their own former YouTube competitor Google Video, also attracted the most unique viewers with 20.5 million people watching an average of 77.8 videos each. Those behind Google matched the videos viewed figures with BBC second (5.9 million), Microsoft third (5.8 million) and Fox Interactive Media fourth (3.9 million).

Figures for YouTube alone show that 19.7 million viewers watched 1.4 billion videos. Interestingly, the figures exclude videos viewed from public computers or access from mobile phones or PDAs. Separate figures reveal that 4.2 million mobile phone users used their device to watch TV or video.
